Secutor Disciplina 3D Lekythos

2800

ca. 25 B.C.

Attributed to Rom av.JC

Unearthed during recent archaeological excavations at the Îlot Laguiche site, this large Attic vase displays a finely detailed frieze. Around its circumference are depicted several gladiators engaged in various scenes of combat and training. One figure stands beside a palus — a wooden training post used by gladiators to hone their techniques — identical to the one shown on the Gladiator in Training mosaic found in the same area.

This iconographic correspondence suggests the existence of a coherent decorative corpus related to gladiatorial practice within the city of Matisco (modern-day Mâcon). Although no amphitheatre remains have yet been identified, these artifacts point to a local enthusiasm for gladiatorial games and spectacles, illustrating the dissemination of Roman cultural models throughout the cities of Gaul.
